Measuring a Room for Carpet or Flooring

Simple Steps

1. Measuring Your Room

Start by measuring the widest parts of the room—both the length and width. Be sure to include alcoves, doorways, and bay windows.
Add at least 10cm to each measurement to allow for fitting, trimming, and any uneven areas in the room.

The piece of carpet you require will be 3.6 metres x 3.4 metres

2. Choosing the Right Roll Width

Next, select the most suitable roll width for your space.
Carpets are typically available in 4 metre or 5 metre widths (please note: not all ranges come in 5m).
Vinyl flooring comes in 2m, 3m, or 4m widths.
The roll width is fixed and cannot be altered.

You can choose any roll length from 1 metre up to 30 metres, depending on your room size.

Using the example above, the best option would be a 4 metre roll width with a 3.4 metre length.

3. A Few More Things to Keep in Mind

Joins for Larger Rooms
If your room measures more than 5 metres (for carpet) or 4 metres (for vinyl) in both directions, you’ll likely need two separate pieces that will be joined during fitting. In these cases, it’s best to contact us before placing your order, so we can ensure both pieces are cut correctly and the pile or pattern is aligned for a seamless join.

Underlay Matters
Adding underlay is highly recommended for most carpets—it boosts comfort and extends the life of your flooring. To calculate how much you need, multiply the length by the width of your room (e.g., 4m x 4m = 16m²).
Please note: Gel-backed and cord carpets usually don’t require underlay. Check the product details to be sure.

Gripper Rods
Gripper rods are essential when fitting carpets with underlay. If you don’t already have them in place, measure around the entire perimeter of your room—including alcoves and bay windows (but exclude doorways).
Our gripper rods are 1.52m (5ft) long and sold in packs of 10. Don’t forget to leave a 10mm gap between the gripper and the wall.

Door Bars
You’ll need a door bar for each doorway, suited to the flooring types being joined (e.g., carpet to vinyl, carpet to tile, etc.). Just count your doorways and choose accordingly.

Stairs & Landings
Measuring stairs can be a bit tricky. We recommend speaking to one of our advisors or a professional fitter. However, if you’d like to measure yourself, we have a Stair Measuring Guide to walk you through the process.
Send us your measurements—we’ll happily help calculate how much carpet you’ll need.
